The Shoe & The 'Ship: A Madill Wildcat Tale

This is a story about a shoe and a ‘ship. In Marshall County, there was a team of Wildcats that worked together to bring a shoe and a ‘ship back to the Madill Event Center. Mission accomplished. The Madill boys basketball team defeated Kingston 60-41 in the last game of the regular season to grab ‘The Shoe”, remained unbeaten atop the Lake Country Conference standings to take the LCC championship for the season and finished 19-3 on the regular season. This is the second LCC championship for the ‘Cats in the tenure of head coach Brett Weiberg in year five of his time in Madill. The ‘Cats won the LCC in 2019-20 under Weiberg. Madill is now 75-42 under Weiberg. This seems to be a storybook season still being written. The basketball team launched a new era of Wildcat basketball inside the Madill Event Center. The boys team is full of senior leadership with RJ Morris, Stephen Sisco, Andrew Ray and River Shaw. Newcomers Ethan Wilkerson and JD Runyan have added an inside punch. John Woody is versatile. Supporting cast including Brylan James, Greg Padgett, Caden McHatton, Jackson Roberts, Izaih Aremendariz, Gilberto Grimaldo and Colby Lambertsen. The final chapter is yet to be written in the playoffs that begin on Saturday

Madill’s boys found themselves trailing 9-3 in the first quarter. However, they took a 10-9 lead and really never looked back. The senior-led ‘Cats captured the moment and pulled ahead to post a 30-18 advantage by halftime. The ‘Cats pushed the pace in the third quarter and the margin grew to 45-27 by the close of the third frame.

Unfortunately, the game for the Lady ‘Cats wasn’t as successful. They fell 56-35 to the Kingston club. The Lady ‘Cats trailed 31-14 by halftime. The team is playing tough down final stretch of the season. Aubrie Cantrell is the lone senior for the Lady ‘Cats. Haley Elkins and Kenzie Mathis have helped with a perimeter threat. Allyson Knight, freshman Lauren Landgraf  and sophomore Ireland Groeber have been solid in the paint. Newcomer Luciana Douglass adds another weapon that opposing coaches must account for in the game. Kaytleigh Davis and Lexus Spanhanks add speed to the Lady ‘Cats’ roster.

The Lady ‘Cats season has been hampered with injuries to Hannah Elkins and Korlee Cunningham-Martin.
