Madill’s Miguel Duran strided through the finish chute in the bright sunlight of Shawnee Saturday with hands raised knowing full well he had claimed the Class 4A individual championship of the boys division. In fact, he was there 13.6 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Miguel ran the course at Gordon Cooper Technology Center in a time of 16:47.4.
“(I’m) really proud and really happy,” Duran said after his championship run. “Hard work the past week and I got it. Coach E always says hard work pays off and it paid off.”
Duran was joined in the top 15 individuals group by teammate Diego Ibarra. Joslyn Stumblingbear was twelfth in the girls division. According to coach Cale Eidson, they will be honorable mention all staters.
The girls and the boys finished fifth as a team overall in Saturday’s state finale.
