Clutch free throws by Wyatt Gray, Seth Coleman and Miguel Duran in the waning moments of Tuesday night’s boys basketball battle with Sulphur helped Madill secure a 47-43 victory on the road in the Lake Country Conference.
The ‘Cats held the Bulldogs to a mere four points in the third quarter and produced 16 to put some space between the clubs to lead by a baker’s dozen at the end of three frames 38-25.
Madill nudged ahead of the ‘Dogs 12-10 at the end of the first quarter and held a 22-21 lead at the half.
The ‘Cats held a 42-36 late in the fourth and began a deliberate offense to keep the ball away from Sulphur. The ‘Dogs managed to drain a couple of deep shots to keep the score tight. Coleman sank two key free throws with 17.76 seconds left in the game to grant the ‘Cats a 45-41 cushion. Duran hit two free throws with 8.89 seconds remaining for the final four-point margin on his only appearance at the charity stripe in the game.
Coleman finished with a team-high 18 points.

The No. 5 Sulphur Lady Bulldogs of Class 3A had only lost once coming in to Tuesday’s contest with Madill. They proved the ranking as the Bulldogs built a 27-8 advantage by the end of the first quarter. Madill trailed 40-14 at the half. Abbie Lambertsen’s eight points paced the Lady ‘Cats. Sulphur only outscored Madill 12-10 in the third frame.
