The Madill girls punctuated the cross country season with a silver exclaimation point! The boys brought back home the overall bronze in the Class 4A state meet in Shawnee Saturday at the Gordon Cooper Tech Center. The girls wrapped the season as the runners up at state.
The girls were only eclipsed by Lincoln Christian of Tulsa. The Lady Wildcats accumulated 99 points on the morning as the rain clouds gave way to sunshine on a chilly weekend day for the championship. Lincoln Christian had 67 points. Madill again was paced by Valeria Calderon. She was clocked at a 12:24.70 for fourth place overall.
“Great!,” Calderon said about how she felt to finish fourth as an individual at state.
Isabel Sanchez was 25th with her 13:27.47. Joslyn Stumblingbear turned in a time of 13:31.07 for 27th. Mercedes Stumblingbear motored around the course in 13:34.94 for 30th. Lala Flores was 36th , Destiney Adams claimed 53rd and Cielo Gomez was 88th in the event.
The Wildcats had 123 points on the day. Lincoln Christian completed the 4A sweep with 75 points for their fifth state crown in the last six campaigns. Byng took the overall silver posting 108 points. Defending individual champ Miguel Duran led the way for the Madill boys on Saturday by recording a time of 17:00.38 for fourth place.
“I am very upset that I didn’t do my thing at state,” Duran said about the event. “And as a team, all we can do is move forward, train harder and get ready for the next one.”
He referenced a quote from author and film producer Garth Stein. “There is no dishonor in losing the race. There is only dishonor in not racing because you are afraid to lose”.
Diego Ibarra was 21st in a time of 17:38.59. Next came Chris Bennett for Madill with his time of 17:59.50 for 31st. Anthony Sanchez’ 18:07.87 was good enough for 38th. Brodie Tull was 43rd , Brandon Serrano was 91st and Gael Salinas finished with a 19:26.44.
Madill improved its’ overall standing in Class 4A over the 2018 state meet. A pair of fifth place finishes was the result for MHS a year ago at the championship event. Madill head coach Cale Eidson received the coaches achievement award Saturday.
