The Madill basketball squads moved to 2-0 on the young season with opening round victories in the Madill Winter Classic Thursday night. The girls cruised to a 58-4 win against Putnam Heights and the boys got by the Panthers 56-45.
The girls put on a dazzling display of offense with a 23-1 run to open the game in the first quarter. Madill then built 38-1 cushion by the half on the way to the triumph. The defense denied Putnam Heights from the scoreboard the entire second and third frames. Ximena Gomez led the way with 11 points on the night. Senior Kristen Chapa chipped in 10 points. Destiney Adams added eight points in the winning effort.
The boys rode the wave of crowd energy in the second quarter to close the half with a 31-24 advantage. They shut off a late surge in the waning moments of the contest to capture an 11-point win. Miguel Duran had a team-high 18 points followed by Ezekiel Fuentes’ 11. Aron Vann tossed in a crowd-pleasing triple in the second frame.
