The Madill basketball boys won the championship in the Ronnie Moore Invitational on Saturday night in Marietta with a 58-44 win over Healdton. The Madill girls team earned third place with a 52-17 victory against Healdton. Miguel Duran was named the tournament’s most outstanding player on the boys side. Wyatt Gray and Jayden Weiberg were also named to the all-tournament team.
Duran led the Madill boys with 23 points in the tourney title contest. Gray added 16 in the victory as the ‘Cats pulled away and then held off Healdton for the championship. The case for Madill started early as the ‘Cats climbed to an 11-2 advantage and then closed the opening period with the 19-9 lead. They held the 37-23 cushion at the half. The lead grew to 54-35 by the end of the third quarter.
The Lady ‘Cats jumped to a 6-0 lead and never looked back on the way to the bronze trophy. The defense held the Bulldogs to just eight points in the entire first half. Madill denied Healdton from scoring a single point the whole fourth frame.
Weiberg once again paced the scoring effort for Madill with 15 points. Kristen Chapa had nine points and Braylee Schneider tossed in eight points on the afternoon.
