The Madill boys basketball team led the Panthers throughout the contest Saturday but had to hold off Pauls Valley late for a 55-50 win that netted the ‘Cats third place in the WampusCat Classic. Jayden Weiberg’s team-high 28 points against Durant kept pace with the Lions. However, Madill dropped the consolation final 60-54 in double overtime Saturday afternoon.
The boys raced out to a 14-6 lead by the end of the first quarter. Madill continued to build on that to possess a 23-15 cushion by halftime. The offensive production increased in the third quarter fueled by quick transitions and the ‘Cats held a 41-26 advantage. The Panthers never totally gave in and even closed the margin to 47-44 before Asa Robertson, Miguel Duran and Ezekiel Fuentes connected on free throws in the closing two minutes of the game. Those three all finished the night by scoring in double figures.
Ximena Gomez sank a free throw with 22 seconds remaining in regulation play that proved to be the point that sent the girls game into the first bonus frame. Weiberg swished a three-pointer from the right baseline to tie the contest 49-all to force the second overtime. Durant then outscored the Lady Wildcats 11-5 in the final four minutes to nail down the victory.
Madill’s girls held a 12-9 lead after one quarter and a 27-23 edge at the half. Durant took a 38-33 lead into the fourth frame.
