Still on a winning streak that has reached six games, the Madill boys defeated Byng 58-51 Tuesday on senior night. Unfortunately the girls lost 55-40 to the Lady Pirates.
In the boys contest, Madill’s Miguel Duran sank two free throws with 3.6 seconds left on the clock to seal victory for the ‘Cats. Duran tossed in a team-high 18 points. Madill managed the early 13-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Wildcats held a 29-25 edge by halftime and opened a 45-37 advantage by the close of the third frame.
The Wildcats began the second half on an 8-0 run in just 1:56 played in the third. The ‘Cats held a 53-48 lead on the strength of Aron Vann’s two free throws with 1:05 left in the game. Asa Robertson kept a possession alive for Madill with 47 seconds left to go as he grabbed the basketball while hopping between two defenders. Ezekiel Fuentes canned a free throw with 11.4 seconds remaining to push Madill’s advantage to 56-49. Fuentes finished the night with 13 points. Vann had 10 points on the night. Austin Maxey added eight. Robertson had seven points and senior Wyatt Gray had two points.
The Madill girls fell behind 19-6 by the end of the first quarter but outscored the Lady Pirates 14-9 in the second frame. The Lady ‘Cats were edged out only 15-14 in the third. The Pirates eclipsed Madill 16-6 in the last quarter. Jayden Weiberg had a team best 19 points on the evening. Destiney Adams added a dozen points. Kristen Chapa had six points. Braylee Schneider had two points and Ximena Gomez had one.
Madill visits Atoka on Friday (Feb. 14) and has drawn a visit to Tecumseh for the district playoffs.
