For the first time since 2013, the Madill boys basketball team is the Lake Country Conference champion. The ‘Cats finished the regular season with 18 victories Monday, including a hard-fought 40-32 win over Marietta on the road. The regular year win total doubles that of last year’s Wildcats’ entire campaign.
“I’m very proud of the fact that we are Lake Country Conference champions,” Madill boys basketball head coach Brett Weiberg said after Monday’s contest. “Our conference is very good and highly competitive and anytime a team can win a regular season championship it is a testament to toughness and character. Any conference champion has to have good players, as well. And we have good players. I am very proud of the boys and happy for our great school, fans and community.”
However, despite a furious comeback attempt, the Madill girls lost 49-43 to the Lady Indians.
In the boys game, Madill began on a solid pace to lead 11-7 after the first quarter. The ‘Cats then stretched it to a 19-12 advantage by halftime. The Wildcats held the 28-20 cushion by the end of the third quarter. Ezekiel Fuentes led the Wildcats in scoring with 16 points. Miguel Duran and Asa Robertson each had nine points. Aron Vann, Austin Maxey and Wyatt Gray each had two points.
The ‘Cats outscored the Indians 7-4 in the final 3:04 of the game.
The Madill girls saw themselves down 13-5 after the first frame and 21-14 by the half. However, Madill outscored Marietta 29-28 in the second to almost pull out the comeback win.
Senior Kristen Chapa led the Lady ‘Cats with 17 points. Jayden Weiberg and Braylee Schneider had six points each. Destiney Adams, Abbie Lambertsen and Ximena Gomez tossed in four points. Joslyn Stumblingbear and Cielo Gomez had two points apiece.
Madill goes to Tecumseh for the Class 4A district playoffs Feb. 21.
