Madill Celebrates Walk to School Wednesday

An estimated crowd of over 600 people gathered in William Ray Memorial Park in Madill Wednesday morning to be a part of Madill Schools’ Walk to School event. It was in conjuction with the national observance of the initiative.

“Children benefit from active commuting. They show higher academic achievement, better cognitive performance, and improved executive functioning. Walking outdoors reduces stress, anxiety, and depression, it also allows engagement to increase physical activity, and exposure to community environments,” Oklahoma State Department of Health health equity specialist Bre Eppler said.

Madill cheerleaders, cross country runners, basketball players, wrestlers, football players and the band were all there today with the younger students from Madill Elementary and the early childhood center.

“The overwhelming support and participation each year in this walk to school event is sure something to experience,” Eppler said. “Every year it continues to grow and make a great start to my day, and appears to do the same for many!”

Mallorie Estes coordinated the event for the school. She serves as the physical education teacher at Madill Elementary.

Each class of younger students was led out by the teacher and a few high school students or players.

The band boomed tunes as the kids began the trek to the school campus.
