Sanchez Tops Podium as Regional Champ, Girls Runners Up; Two 'Cats Headed for State with Girls Group

Madill’s Isabel Sanchez reached the top of the regional championship podium on Saturday afternoon following the Class 4A regional in Waurika. She stood alone as the individual gold winner in her season-best time of 12:17.15. That paced the Lady ‘Cats’ run to the regional runners-up spot as a group.   She was followed by senior teammate Joslyn Stumblingbear that crossed the line in 13:32.12. Korlee Cunningham Martin turned in a personal best time of 13:40.72 for 15th place. The girls qualified for the state meet as a team. The boys finished 8th as a team just outside of the top seven teams that get the state bid. However, senior Anthony Sanchez and freshman James Valadez grab a state bid as individuals. Sanchez was 13th overall today. Valadez came through in 25th

"I thought the girls ran really well as a team today, one of their better races of the season, and at the right time," Madill cross country head coach Cale Eidson said Saturday afternoon. "Isabel  set her goals early on this year, and has made sure to reach them every step of the way, including winning regionals today."

The girls arrived Saturday ranked No. 8 in Class 4A and Sanchez had the seventh-best time in all of the class. The boys were ranked No. 24.

"The boys had a tough year overall, but they gave their all and we can't ask for any more than that. Anthony and James will represent our boys at state the right way and I'm excited for them," Eidson said.
