An incomplete pass on the Redskins’ final drive of the game sealed a 36-35 victory for the ‘Cats in the annual Marshall County Super Bowl Friday. Stephen Sisco had just caught a two-point conversion pass in the front right corner of the end zone just inside the pylon to put Madill in front with 40 seconds left.
“I’m just proud of our kids. Happy for them, they battled all night,” Head coach Chad Speer said. “It’s just huge for our kids. You know they’ve worked extremely hard for the last six months, some of them 12 months trying to get this thing over the hump.”
The victory is the fifth of the season. Madill has not won this many games in a season since 2016.
“Tonight was a huge win for our program,” Speer said.
Kendall Robertson’s second effort pushed the ball across the goal line to close within a single point of the Redskins. The Wildcats made the bold decision to go for two points on the road and that move proved to be the deciding factor in a see-saw battle. That was Robertson’s fourth touchdown of the evening.
The ‘Cats moved the ball effectively for most of the night on offense. They took the 7-0 advantage with 1:24 left in the opening quarter on Robertson’s 14-yard scamper. The senior took the football 66 yards to the end zone to strech the ‘Cats lead to 14-0. Kingston cut the lead in half on a TD run from Brandon Watson with 6:26 remaining in the first half. Watson added a 21-yard scoring jaunt at the 3:06 mark of the second quarter. Just before half, Robertson found River Shaw all alone for a nine-yard score.
The ‘Skins scored the next 15 points in the second half to take their first lead in the contest at 28-21. Robertson’s 18-yard scamper tied the contest at 28 behind the power of a Jimena Guevara extra point. Watson’s one-yard plunge pushed Kingston ahead at 35-28 with nine minutes to go in the game.
