Senior Night Set for Friday; Fall Activity Seniors to be Recognized at Football Finale

This fall has seen big achievements accomplished by Madill students and athletes. Friday, the seniors will be recognized for the contributions they have made to the plethora of programs on the Madill High School campus. The senior ceremony begins at 6:30 p.m. for football, cross country and softball. The band seniors will be showcased at halftime of the Madill-Little Axe football game. That will be around 8 p.m.

The football team is assured of its’ first non-losing season in five seasons with the win against Kingston Oct. 29. It has the opportunity to post the most victories in a year since 2016.

"I think they have done a really good job of buying in. Very proud of how they have handled their up and down senior year,” Madill football head coach Chad Speer said of the seniors on the gridiron. "They have a chance to end the year on a great note and the school’s first winning season in 5 years so that is a great testament to them!"

The girls cross country team finished fifth overall at the OSSAA Class 4A state meet on Oct. 30. They went into the state meet ranked No. 7 in Class 4A. The team wrapped the final event a couple notches above where most thought. Senior Isabel Sanchez reached all-state status by finishing 10th as an individual. The girls were also regional runners-up as a team Oct. 23 with Sanchez as the individual regional champion in her season-best time of 12:17.15. Sanchez runs in the meet of champions Nov. 6 at North Rock Creek in Shawnee. This senior class never finished outside the top 10 in the state meet. They reached state runners-up in 2019. Sanchez is expected to sign a letter of intent Nov. 10 to run cross country for Southwestern in Weatherford next year.

The cross country boys were ranked in the top 25 for much of the 2021 season. Senior Anthony Sanchez advanced to the state meet to finish a solid career. The boys senior class earned third place at the state meet in 2019 as sophomores.

"I've had this group since they were 6th graders, and they've worked that whole time and done what has been asked of them," Madill cross country head coach Cale Eidson said. "They are a joy to have and coach and well-deserving of any of their accomplishments."

The Madill band earned a superior rating at the regional contest in McAlester earlier this year. That marked the second consectutive year to get that rating. It is believed to be the first time in MHS band in school history to have that distinction. The judges gave Madill the highest scores possible in the 2021 contest.

OTHER ACCOMPLISHMENTS THIS YEAR:

2nd Place Overall at Pauls Valley Marching Championships

2nd Place Overall at Tishomingo  Band Day Extravaganza

3rd Place OBA State Championship in Class 3A

8th Place Overall OBA State Championship Classes A-3A

"There are not enough words that can be said about our phenomenal band seniors. They have been the driving force of change for our band program. They have literally  and figuratively  torn down walls to put our program on a new trajectory. (the school had to tear down a wall in the old band room so that they could accommodate their class size when they were 7th graders). I cannot express enough how proud I am of what they have accomplished and I look forward to the difference they will make in our world," Madill band director Kendal Hasty said.

Emilie Johnson, a senior on the Madill softball team, was named to the all-Lake Country Conference squad in 2021 as well as to the all-district team in 4A-3.

The game kicks off at 7 p.m. inside Blake Smiley Stadium.
