The Madill wrestling season begins with practice this week. Madill head coach Jim Love is a member of the Oklahoma Chapter of the Wrestling Hall of Fame. Coach Love encourages those students that are interested in participating in the sport to stop by the wrestling room inside the Madill softball building and contact him. The softball building is located just across the teachers’ parking lot near the Madill High School building.
There will be a boys team and a girls squad. Brayleigh Thompson became the first Lady Wildcat wrestler to advance to the state tournament through a regional last season. It was the first official season for a girls wrestling team at Madill High School. She finished at the state tournament 10-5 on the year.
Griffon Williams took third last year at the state tournament and posted a 15-3 mark before graduating from MHS.
The Wildcats have a long and rich history on the mat. Madill was back-to-back state champions as a team in 1992 and 1993.
Steve Elkins is the most decorated wrestler. He has 4 individual state titles. He was the 8th to accomplish that feat in Oklahoma history.. He amassed a 131-13 career mark in high school and was 65-0 in his final two seasons as a Wildcat. Madill has had nine individual state champions: Steve Elkins 1991-95 (4); Brent Parkey 2001-03 (3); Jerry Furr 1997 (1); Bubba McCullough 1994 (1); Duke Remington 1992 (1); Grant Brown 1992 (1); Chuck McHatton 1990 (1); Ian Chapman 1984-85 (2); David Rushing 1981 (1).
