Madill Begins New Basketball Campaign with Twin Wins Over Tishomingo Friday

Madill’s boys outscored Tishomingo 9-0 in overtime to claim a 48-39 comeback win in the first basketball game of the season Friday night at home. The girls squad coasted to a 41-13 victory against the Lady Indians in front of a capacity crowd in the Wildcat Fieldhouse.

“Getting started off on the right foot is a great feeling!” Madill girls basketball head coach Shawn Runyan said Friday night. “Gives us something to build on.”

In the boys contest, the ‘Cats jumped out to a 10-6 advantage by the close of the first frame. However, the Indians took the lead by scoring 13 points in the second quarter to Madill’s lone bucket by Zeke Fuentes. Tishomingo owned the 19-12 cushion at the break.

Madill made up ground in the third after falling behind 25-12. The ‘Cats scratched back to even the game 25-all with 2:29 left in the third quarter on a basket from Stephen Sisco. Madill went on a 7-5 run to hold a slim 32-30 edge by the end of the third quarter.

The teams traded buckets until the 2:58 mark of the fourth when Kendal Robertson nailed a three-point bucket from the left baseline to give Madill the 37-34 lead. Tish netted a basket to pull within 37-36 before the Wildcats’ Nick Northcutt banked a shot off the glass to push Madill up, 39-36.

Tyson Barrett’s three-point basket from the left wing with just under 10 seconds to play in regulation tied the contest and eventually sent it to an extra session.

Madill then got key free throws from RJ Morris and Fuentes to salt away the win. Fuentes paced the ‘Cats with his 16 points. Morris completed the night with 15. Northcutt had a presence in the paint with seven points. Robertson and Sisco had five points apiece.

“First of all, I thought it was an exciting and fun game.  Tishomingo is well-coached and I thought they played well.  I am really proud of the boys.  I felt like we played really hard and competed the entire 36 minutes,” Madill boys basketball head coach Brett Weiberg said.  “It's always good to open the season with a win; especially, when it's against a rival.  Thank you, to our fans; especially, our student section for giving us an incredible home court advantage!”

The girls were led by East Central University signee Jayden Weiberg’s team high 19 points. Madill held Tishomingo scoreless in the first quarter as the Lady ‘Cats built a 6-0 advantage. Weiberg had all five of Madill’s points in the second stanza and the Lady ‘Cats held an 11-6 lead.

Madill accelerated on offense in the third quarter to put 13 points on the board to Tish’s four. The Lady ‘Cats didn’t let the Lady Indians score but three points in the closing quarter. Hannah Elkins finished with six points. Allyson Knight chipped in four points. Halee Elkins tossed in three points. Braylee Schneider, Aubrie Cantrell, Abbie Lambertsen and Lucero Gomez each had two points and Joslyn Stumblingbear had one.

Reserves saw action for the ‘Cats in the latter stages of the game.
