The win didn’t come easy for the Madill boys basketball team, but the ‘Cats’ comeback against Comanche yielded a 49-44 triumph Tuesday on the road. The victory marks 10 in a row for the boys. The girls fell to Class 3A’s No. 9 ranked Comanche club 58-42.
Madill took advantage of Comanche miscues to chip away at the lead in the fourth quarter. RJ Morris sank two free throws with 8.6 seconds to play to give the Wildcats the five-point cushion. Comanche had closed it to 47-44 with 12.9 seconds to go. Ezekiel Fuentes buried two free throws with 26.4 ticks left on the clock to put Madill up 47-42. The Indians had canned a three-point basket with 28.5 seconds remaining to pull within 45-42 of the ‘Cats. Two free throws with 50 seconds left by Fuentes built the Madill lead to 45-39. Kendall Robertson’s bucket with 3:10 to play gave Madill the edge for good at 41-39. Stephen Sisco’s three-pointer from the right wing tied the score at 39-all with 4:30 to go in the game. Morris’ shot with 5:05 left on the clock pulled the ‘Cats within a single possession of the Indians at 39-36.
The Wildcats were off to a slower than normal start Tuesday night and trailed the Indians 13-8 by the end of the first quarter.
“It was an interesting game,” Madill boys basketball head coach Brett Weiberg said. “There was certainly some adversity and we have to continue, grow and mature when adversity hits.”
Comanche continued to lead the ‘Cats 22-14 by halftime.
“We had to go into our trap game the second half and that made the difference,” Weiberg said.
Madill managed to keep the game within striking distance at 34-27 by the end of the third frame and began to apply the pressure to the Indians on the defensive end.
“Comanche turned the ball over and we were fortunate that they missed some open shots,” Weiberg said.”Our kids did not quit and we were able to make plays and make free throws down the stretch. Always good to win a conference game on the road.”
Fuentes paced the boys with 14 points on the night. Robertson put up 13 points. Morris chipped in nine points. Nick Northcutt added his eight points. Sisco had three points and Javier Gomez tossed in two points.
The Lady Wildcats fell behind highly touted Comanche 19-5 by the end of the first frame. The Lady Indians had only lost one game all year going into Tuesday’s game.
